This, too, is the Biblical description of work. In sin men lose their dominion over the creation which God gave them, and their relationship with this creation becomes toil. “Cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for our of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Gen. 3:17-19)Work represents the broken relationship between men and the rest of creation. Men, literally, work to death. The fallenness of work, the broken relationship between men and the rest of creation which work is, involves both the alienation of men from nature and from the rest of creation, including the principalities and powers. In work men lose their dominion over the principalities and are in bondage to the principalities. Instead of men ruling the great institutions — corporations, unions, and so on — men are ruled by the great institutions. William Stringfellow
About This Quote

When we see a person working on something we don't like, we make the assumption that they must like it. We assume that if someone is putting in the time and effort to do something on their own, they must be happy with it. However, we must remember that we live in a world where things are not always what they seem. If we see someone grinding away at something that seems like it is important to them, we should never assume that they like it or that they enjoy doing it.

We simply cannot tell from looking at them what they are thinking or how they feel about what they are doing. These people might have been given a task by their boss or manager and might have been told to do it by their boss or manager, but they could have been doing this for years with the hope of getting the promotion or getting a raise or being made a supervisor themselves. It might be that this person really does enjoy what he is doing, thinks he is good at it, and thinks his boss sees potential in him. He might be doing this out of a genuine sense of duty to his boss and a desire for a mutually beneficial future together with his boss when he gets promoted.

Or, he might be doing it out of fear for when he doesn't get promoted or isn't given a raise or isn't made a supervisor himself. In any case, the point is that when we look at someone who is working on something we don't like, we can't know whether or not the person likes it. We can only assume based on our own reasoning that if someone is working on something then he must like it. The truth is, however, that in most situations when an employee puts in time and energy at work there really isn't anything in particular he would want to put up with just to get the job done.

Most people just go through the motions because they can't afford to lose their job and because they are afraid of losing their job if they don't go through the motions. They just want to get out of there as quickly as possible without attracting attention to themselves for quitting too quickly so as not to attract attention for quitting too soon so as not to attract attention for leaving too early so as not to attract attention for leaving too soon so as not to attract attention for leaving too soon so as not to attract attention for leaving too soon so as not to attract attention for leaving too soon so as not to attract attention for leaving too soon so as not to attract
